In 2024, a peer group representing seven universities and supported by the European University Association explored how institutions can ensure continuity and quality in teaching and learning during crises. Through a cross-national analysis, the group identified institutional practices and preparedness strategies, publishing a comprehensive report and developing a matrix to classify crisis types as a basis for effective resilience strategies. This workshop will present the report’s key findings and foster interactive discussion to share cross-regional insights and develop transferable approaches for institutional resilience. It targets academic leaders, policymakers and educational developers engaged in crisis preparedness and quality assurance.

Do we truly understand the barriers international students face, and how institutional structures and our own actions shape their experiences? This workshop invites higher education professionals to reconnect with international student experiences and explore how empathy can transform communication and support. Constant exposure to student challenges can lead to desensitisation and a focus on individual resilience instead of systemic change. Using a game called Walk a Mile, developed by international students, you will learn through theory and experiential learning, bypassing psychological defences to uncover barriers and develop empathy and compassionate communications, and you will design concrete actions to build more inclusive environments.

This hands-on workshop builds on two previous EAIE sessions and responds to the need for staff to receive practical generative artificial intelligence training with clear guardrails. You will learn to write reliable prompts, build an AI assistant using institutional documents and create a simple AI agent for routine tasks. We will address privacy, ethics, staff capacity and human contact, using approved tools and no personal data. Everyone will leave with working prototypes, a privacy checklist and a pilot plan to apply AI throughout the international student life cycle and in international student support processes.

How can partnerships sustain higher education through crises? This session will bring together the Lebanese American University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Freie Universität Berlin to share lessons from leading through war and instability. Presenters will explore how trust, empathy and flexible Erasmus+ cooperation can preserve mobility and academic engagement in times of disruption.

This poster session explores data-driven and ethical strategies for attracting and supporting international students in an era of digital transformation and global competition. Through practical insights and case studies, I will highlight how educational institutions can build authentic connections, diversify student recruitment and create sustainable strategies that go beyond numbers.

How can higher education institutions turn cultural diversity into a strength? At Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, diversity is not only a reality – it's a powerful asset. Yet it also presents challenges in the classroom and the workplace. To support staff in addressing these complexities, we developed an intercultural compass: an engaging intranet webpage and online learning pathway designed to foster intercultural awareness and inclusive practices across our institution.

As European university alliances and other networks evolve, their leaders are navigating uncharted waters, balancing the stability of traditional academic fortresses with the openness of collaborative harbours. This session will explore the personal and systemic dimensions of leading transformation. We will examine paradoxes of leadership, share lived experiences and begin redefining leadership as a collective, adaptive practice within a changing higher education landscape.

This poster shows how the UK Council for International Student Affairs transformed the #WeAreInternational Awards 2025 from recognition into sector change. Alongside showcasing winners, we map how case studies fed into our policy positions, member guidance, advocacy with government and partners, and practical tools for institutions. You will leave with evidence, templates and a roadmap to run awards and to turn stories into impact.

What does it take to turn a transnational partnership into a functioning joint institute? This poster explores the joint institute of Aix-Marseille University and Wuhan University of Technology, looking at how shared vision, governance, staff engagement, multilingualism and student experience can build a lasting institutional framework. We will reflect on communication and evaluate our success. You are invited to exchange ideas and compare approaches to sustainable, balanced transnational cooperation.

How do you build an international study hub in a small industrial town? This poster presents how a model of strategic partnerships between industry, municipality and education led to a Danish collaboration in which six institutions are co-creating and building a shared physical campus, attracting global students and talent to a rural biotech cluster.

Academic freedom is a cornerstone of higher education, yet across Europe many researchers report increasing hesitation to share findings, participate in public debate or raise concerns within their institutions. Fear of backlash, reputational attacks or professional consequences can discourage open dialogue and critical inquiry. This campfire session will invite you to reflect on how universities can safeguard both academic freedom and social safety.

While there may be no perfect recipe for academic solidarity, this session will offer an in-depth discussion about the main considerations when setting up support actions for researchers at risk, the inevitable questions of how to define and assess risk and inclusiveness, and whether these run in opposition to excellence. We will also cover concrete prospects for EU and national support in the coming years and what to expect or hope for in the next EU budget.

Peer mentorship can be a powerful support mechanism for early-career professionals and female leaders in international higher education. This session will explore how mentorship circles foster a sense of belonging, shared problem solving and collaborative leadership development. Join our circle as we draw on personal experiences and collective insights to share inspiring practices to create, cultivate and nurture these communities.

Most reports on international students focus on tuition fees. But what happens after graduation? This panel session will share research tracking over 310,000 international graduates. Many stay and work in host countries, filling critical jobs. Others return home or move to new countries. We'll share findings on where graduates work, what jobs they do, which industries employ them and how they move between countries.

Internationalisation is undergoing a quiet revolution. Political instability, global crises and shifting priorities are reshaping how international offices operate. This session will explore how international relations officers can foster ethical, values-based internationalisation while strengthening resilience and crisis preparedness. We will exchange experiences, explore practical strategies and reflect on how values-based decision-making can guide responsible partnership assessment.
