Academic freedom is a cornerstone of higher education, yet across Europe many researchers report increasing hesitation to share findings, participate in public debate or raise concerns within their institutions. Fear of backlash, reputational attacks or professional consequences can discourage open dialogue and critical inquiry. This campfire session will invite you to reflect on how universities can safeguard both academic freedom and social safety.

Rosalyn Eder

Paracelsus Medical University, Austria

Rosalyn Eder is the Head of the International Office at Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg, Austria. She has more than seventeen years of experience in global higher education, and is a member of the EAIE’s thematic committee on social responsibility. Her research examines policy and practice in global higher education through the critical lens of social equity. She is in Globalisation and Education, Research Methods and Cross-Cultural Management.

Emmy Arts leads the International Relations Department at École Centrale de Marseille, France, handling international cooperation since 2004. Her background includes Linguistics and Environmental Sciences. Emmy is a Sociology Doctoral candidate at Université Paris Cité, co-directed with the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil, studying minorities' access to international mobility in the context of higher education policies in Brazil. Her research aims to enhance educational policies for better social outcomes, stressing education as a public good.
