While there may be no perfect recipe for academic solidarity, this session will offer an in-depth discussion about the main considerations when setting up support actions for researchers at risk, the inevitable questions of how to define and assess risk and inclusiveness, and whether these run in opposition to excellence. We will also cover concrete prospects for EU and national support in the coming years and what to expect or hope for in the next EU budget.
Elisabetta Dolzan works at the University of Trento (Italy), where she focuses on the implementation of programmes for refugee and at-risk students and scholars, including the EU-funded SAFE for researchers at risk. Over recent years, the University of Trento has been hosting at-risk academics with a wide variety of research and geographical backgrounds, developing hosting plans accordingly. Elisabetta is a lawyer by training; before moving into the education sector, she gained over a decade of experience in the protection of migrants and refugees, both as a practicing solicitor in the UK and as a refugee status determination officer at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Trento (2007) and a post-graduate diploma in legal practice from the University of Westminster (2012). She has been an exchange student in the UK (University of Lancaster) and in the US (University of California, San Diego).
