How can universities create global classrooms that revolutionise learning through collaboration? Drawing on the HUBIoC capacity-building project, this workshop will provide practical strategies for designing student-centred, internationalised curriculum experiences that empower educators and students to create meaningful, lasting change across continents. Based on pedagogical and methodological principles, we will demonstrate how to build global classrooms that also serve as incubators of global leaders capable of implementing innovations in pedagogical practice. In these classrooms, internationalisation of the curriculum becomes a tangible practice in a common language that enhances global competencies in all participants.

💡 Internationalisation of the curriculum | Internationalisation at home

Curriculum internationalisation is a complex task often perceived to conflict with academics’ other priorities. In this workshop, we will challenge you to foster a campus ecosystem to engage academics in internationalisation. Inspired by research-backed examples, you will learn to use a curriculum internationalisation inventory, transforming the plan to your context. We will guide you to identify key stakeholders, diagnose challenges and eliminate inefficiencies to build an optimised path forward.

• Envision a campus-wide ecosystem for engaging academics in internationalisation;
• Articulate a wider understanding of key stakeholders to involve, as well as research-based strategies to overcome challenges that academics experience in engagement;

💡 Collaborative online international learning (COIL)

Administrative staff play a vital role in supporting global engagement, yet they are often excluded from internationalisation efforts. Collaborative Online International Learning or virtual exchange for staff can address this gap by enhancing their intercultural, professional and technical skills through sustained virtual collaboration with professional counterparts abroad. Participants report high satisfaction, increased motivation, greater intercultural confidence and improved job-related skills. This workshop will situate COIL and virtual exchange for staff as internationalisation at home, providing data on the intra-institutional and inter-institutional benefits and guiding you in developing and launching your own initiatives.

Learning outcomes

• Develop an understanding of the steps required to implement a COIL or virtual exchange programme for staff;
• Draft a programme you can implement at your institution;
• Meet partners with whom you can collaborate on implementation;
• Acquire a guide with step-by-step instructions and useful summaries of the information discussed during the workshop.

INSSPIRE is an Erasmus+ project that aims to stimulate evidence-based inclusive education for food systems and climate change through building intra-university capacity, strengthening university–community collaboration and enhancing inter-university partnership. This poster presents the INSSPIRE Collaborative Online International Learning implementation manual, co-created with institutions across sub-Saharan East Africa.

This poster invites you to rethink how immersive technologies such as virtual reality and avatar-based virtual worlds can enrich international higher education, connecting people in teaching, learning and recruitment. Drawing on projects by RWTH Aachen University and the German Academic Exchange Service, it challenges conventional approaches to visibility and connection in education and marketing. You can explore the virtual reality environments live using our headsets.

Seventeen global health leaders in seven countries participated in the GlobalUp programme pilot – an intercultural development initiative led by Nuvance, now part of Northwell Health. Through asynchronous online modules and participation in live, virtual, facilitated dialogue sessions, participants gained cultural humility and grew global competence as measured by the Intercultural Development Inventory, empowering more ethical, equity-minded educational partnerships in global health.

Educational developers or pedagogical advisers are often overlooked in internationalisation, but European university alliances offer a unique opportunity to reposition them as central actors in internationalisation. This session will examine how their involvement can drive meaningful change within institutions, and we will argue for their recognition as key stakeholders in alliance governance, educational strategy and implementation.

More than 20 million Europeans live on islands and in coastal regions, where traditional mobility often fails. Can internationalisation at home transform peripheral universities from passive recipients to active shapers of European higher education? Drawing on the EUNICoast alliance's experiences, this fishbowl will confront a critical question: How do we design internationalisation at home that genuinely builds capacity, engages faculty and leads to mobility, rather than just substituting for it?

This poster shares outcomes from a staff week on internationalisation at home at UIC Barcelona, where participants from 18 universities reflected on institutional practices. Surveys and design sessions revealed shared challenges – language, motivation and resources – and showed how peer exchange and co-creation can boost engagement and extend internationalisation at home impact beyond mobility.

Living abroad doesn't guarantee intercultural learning. Is intentional preparation and debriefing the missing link to ensure truly transformative student mobility? Through live simulations and role plays, you will experience innovative pre- and post-mobility modules that bring emotional awareness, reflective depth and intercultural sensitivity into mobility support. Rethink current practices, explore what's missing and leave with tools to foster more meaningful, high-quality mobility experiences.

Many Blended Intensive Programmes begin as individual passion projects, but how can we maintain this momentum over time, even in the face of difficulties? This interactive World Café session will invite you to reflect on hurdles or blockers to the sustainable offering of BIPs. Together, we will identify key success factors of BIPs that are offered over several iterations or that are embedded in local study programmes.

In an era of artificial intelligence-driven, hyper-efficient education, this session will explore counter-rhythms of embodied, relational and friction-rich learning. Drawing on perspectives from the Global North and South, we will challenge assumptions and examine pedagogical and mobility practices that are messy, interdisciplinary and human-centred, fostering resilience, empathy, adaptability and intercultural awareness while transforming international learning experiences.

COILectiVE NL is an initiative of Dutch vocational and higher education institutions, together with Nuffic, to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing and quality enhancement in Collaborative Online International Learning and virtual exchange. This poster will highlight our activities, results and shared vision around COIL and internationalisation at home, as well as our ideas about implementing COIL within other frameworks, such as European university alliances.

This poster explores how visual communication can create a new rhythm for intercultural learning. Drawing on Collaborative Online International Learning projects, it demonstrates how visualisations, metaphors and artefacts enhance cross-cultural awareness, empathy and reflection, rather than merely describing them, and how this promotes multi-perspectivity and sensitivity in international collaboration. You will discover how seeing and creating together can transform understanding across cultures.

The Hague Internationalisation at Home (THIAH) is a comprehensive mapping tool. It helps lecturers, programme managers, educational developers and other stakeholders to critically reflect on their understanding and to purposefully enhance their practices. As such, it can support strategy development, data analysis and reflection on internationalisation at home interventions. This poster shows how the tool is composed, its diverse applications and testimonials from different institutions.

A University of Florida Master's course on professional writing integrates virtual exchange connecting students with peers at Univali in Brazil. Teams collaborate to explore intercultural communication and create business culture guides. My poster shows the measurable impacts of virtual exchange and Collaborative Online International Learning. Aggregate student data shows that the experiential project builds global awareness and adaptability while fostering real-world professional communication.

The multilingual glocal classroom fosters a global–local learning environment through English as a medium of instruction, integrating intercultural and multilingual competencies. It advances internationalisation and European cooperation by adopting flexible language policies aligned with ERUA, EUniWell and NEOLAiA alliance frameworks. This approach enhances students' cultural literacy, promotes inclusivity and prepares learners for diverse career paths within and beyond Europe.

How can we move beyond traditional credit mobility to empower students as co-creators of their transnational learning paths? The YUFE model transforms international higher education by giving students agency to design personalised, cross-European learning journeys – combining mobility, interdisciplinarity and community engagement – while ensuring academic quality and institutional collaboration.

The Intercultural Barometer by the CIVICA alliance examines how European students engage with academic information and artificial intelligence. It highlights how intercultural differences shape digital practices, research habits and ethical awareness, providing insights to foster intercultural competencies, support responsible AI use and guide inclusive academic services across universities.

💡 Teaching, learning and curriculum

The student learning experience is impacted by where and how we design and deliver our curriculum. But, what does Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC) look like when it is contextualised by local realities? Featuring perspectives from Brazil, Europe and Palestine, this session explores ethical internationalisation, decolonisation of curriculum and course design and virtual learning in conflict areas. An interactive activity invites academic and administrative staff to reframe global challenges through their local university context. Participants will then discuss initial steps for a practical, participatory, and globally grounded action plan.
