EAIE Barometer: Internationalisation in Europe

The EAIE Barometer is the largest and most geographically representative study of its kind ever undertaken in Europe. The research focuses on the current state of affairs regarding internationalisation of higher education in Europe as viewed by professionals directly involved in this work. The EAIE Barometer forms an ongoing series of studies, providing longitudinal comparisons on developments in internationalisation over time.

2023 EAIE Barometer survey: thank you for participating!


Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the EAIE Barometer survey. Your input will help to influence future policy and practice within our field. We will now work on compiling the data collected from your responses hope to launch an extensive report in 2024.

First edition

Based on a wealth of data and information gathered in 2014, the first EAIE Barometer: Internationalisation in Europe focuses on the state of internationalisation in Europe, key developments and challenges in the field, as well as the specific skills and needs of staff involved in internationalisation. The report was informed by 2411 survey respondents from 33 countries: 2093 employees of higher education institutions and 318 from other organisations involved with international higher education. The report provides valuable insights into developments in the field, actual practices employed by European institutions and tools required for the further professionalisation of internationalisation.

International Strategic Partnerships

Collaboration between higher education institutions is a growing trend, with many institutions creating partnerships in order to expand and enhance international offerings. This e-publication, an addition to the EAIE Barometer published in 2015, unveils the state of strategic partnerships in Europe and is aimed at international officers seeking to improve their knowledge of the topic. It covers quantity and active implementation, priority regions, content and institutional factors. The e-publication is based on data from the first edition of the EAIE Barometer survey, conducted throughout the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in 2014.

Second edition

The second edition of the Barometer was completed by 2317 respondents in 45 countries across the European Higher Education Area and built upon the results of the first edition, published in 2015, in order to detail changes and growth within the field and highlight trends.
