Gain invaluable skills necessary for designing and introducing a successful strategic internationalisation plan for your institution or department. Led by seasoned trainers Douglas Proctor and Sabine Sainte-Rose, the EAIE Academy course “Developing a strategic internationalisation plan: mastering the fundamentals” will take place on 16–17 May. This two-day course allows you to learn through eight modules, enjoy social breaks, and network with a drink at The Social Hub Amsterdam City where the course will take place.
Throughout the course, participate in solution-focused discussions, leverage peer consultancy, and acquire practical management tools. The program guides you through creating a successful strategic internationalisation plan for your institution or department, covering steps for each planning phase, pitfalls to avoid, and the involvement of key stakeholders.
In this course, you’ll be guided through the entire process of designing and introducing a successful strategic internationalisation plan for your institution or department. You’ll learn the steps to take for each phase of strategic planning, the pitfalls to avoid and the key stakeholders to involve. You’ll also learn how to diagnose your strategic needs and will consider how important communication is to each stage of the strategic planning process. You’ll draw lessons from relevant case studies and a range of hands-on exercises, and will start to develop a plan of action suited to your circumstances. You’ll also have the opportunity to reflect on how to monitor and evaluate the progress of your plan. It’s strategic planning made practicable, and by the end you’ll be ready to take action upon returning to your institution.
Whether your work involves developing an internationalisation strategy in your unit/office or drafting your institution’s first internationalisation plan, this course will give you the practical knowledge and tools you need to advise leadership, engage key stakeholders and begin to develop a plan tailored to your needs.

Douglas Proctor is Honorary Fellow, Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne, Australia and serves as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. At Swinburne, he provides institution-wide leadership on global engagement and oversees the university’s global strategy in teaching, research and outreach. Previously, he was Director, UCD Global at University College Dublin, Ireland. Douglas completed a PhD at the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne in late 2016. He has authored papers and reports in relation to his doctoral research, as well as on the global landscape of international education research. With Dr Laura Rumbley, Douglas co-edited The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education (Routledge, 2018) which offers new perspectives on the future of internationalisation in higher education from a younger generation of scholars and practitioners. Douglas is currently Chair of the EAIE Publications Committee.

Sabine Sainte-Rose is Associate Director for Promotion and Internationalisation in the International and External Affairs of the Université Grenoble Alpes, France. She has worked in five different countries, being in leadership positions in the French diplomacy and cultural network, developing extensive skills in management, academic policy, marketing; PR, and curriculum development. Since 2002, she has enjoyed managing diverse teams of international professionals. Sabine served as a Steering group member of the Expert Community Strategy and Management from 2020 to 2022 term and is currently a member of the EAIE General Council.
