Committee member profiles

Each Committee has its own requirements and preferred member characteristics and skills. See below what is expected of each Committee member.

Conference Programme Committee (CPC)

Roles and Responsibilities

The CPC works in close cooperation with the Thematic Committees, the EAIE Board, and with the EAIE Office in the development of the conference programme. The main focus of the CPC is to ensure that the quality of the EAIE conference programme is continuously of the highest level possible and that the content meets the needs of the EAIE’s diverse membership. The Committee reviews and makes the final selection of the various programme elements of the Annual Conference, such as the sessions and posters. Additionally, the Committee actively develops a number of programme features such as hot topic sessions and other events. Quality assurance, based on evaluations of all programme events, and forecasting are also a high priority when developing all future conference programmes.

Serving as a CPC member offers the opportunity to be one of the creative minds behind the EAIE Annual Conference, the largest event of its kind in Europe. However, it is also a considerable commitment that does require time. CPC members must be prepared to travel to attend and actively participate in all in-person or online scheduled CPC meetings (four full-day meetings per year), as well as email exchanges and occasional (group) work outside of the meetings. At times, meetings require a large amount of preparation, including individually reading and reviewing all 500+ proposals in the period of November–December. Individual members may also be given specific tasks between meetings and then be asked to report back.

Preferred characteristics

Proven professional experience in International Higher Education (IHE): Assuring high-quality programme content requires the ability to assess developments in all facets of the field. Therefore, having a broad knowledge of and demonstrated experience within international higher education is extremely important. Committee members should additionally be regular participants of the Annual Conference.

Demonstrated involvement within the EAIE: Aside from being an EAIE member, the candidate should have experience in other areas of the EAIE as well, for example: attendance at the annual conference, having previously submitted session proposals for inclusion in the conference programme, participation in EAIE trainings, or volunteering in another way. This demonstrates knowledge in and familiarity with the work of the EAIE, but also demonstrates the candidate's shared values and belief in the mission and vision of the EAIE.

Strong analytical and decision-making skills: Developing and evaluating programme features requires critical thinking and the capacity to assimilate information quickly, reach balanced conclusions and articulate recommendations.

Understanding of teamwork: Many people contribute their efforts toward the realisation of the Association’s goals and objectives – no one does it alone. Well-developed interpersonal and intercultural communication skills are an essential element of effective teamwork.

Sound judgment, integrity and resilience: Determining the conference programme requires the ability to subordinate special interests for the greater good of the Association, including the need to examine issues impartially, and to make and explain decisions that may not be popular with some members.

Commitment: Serving as a member of the CPC is both an honour and a reward, but it requires a demonstrated commitment to the organisation and its mission and goals, in addition to dedicating the time to serve.

Reliability: Designing and developing an exciting and innovative programme takes time and dedication. CPC members must be able to rely on each other to complete all reviews and tasks on time and be present and punctual when attending all meetings throughout the year.

Other desired attributes:

  • Open-minded

  • Willing to sacrifice one’s own interests for the greater good

  • Global perspective

  • Willingness and availability to serve

  • Pro-active

  • Well-connected

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including proficiency in using electronic tools of communication

Professional Development Committee (PDC)

Roles and responsibilities

The main responsibility of the PDC lies in developing and implementing an overall training programme that is based on the vision and mission of the Association while also initiating and inspiring new training ideas. The training products that the PDC is responsible for are the EAIE (online) Academy, In-house training, Conference workshops, and Train the Trainer. The Committee also advises on policy and procedures for working with the EAIE trainer pool.

Serving as a PDC member offers the opportunity to be one of the key influencers of knowledge dissemination within the EAIE. It requires preparing for, attending and actively participating in all scheduled PDC meetings (minimum of four per year and a mixture of virtual and face to face), as well as e-mail exchanges. Individual members may also be given specific tasks between meetings and then be asked to report back.

Preferred characteristics

Strong analytical and decision-making skills: Assessing contributions and advising on policies requires critical thinking and the capacity to assimilate information quickly, reach balanced conclusions and articulate recommendations.

Commitment: Serving as a member of the PDC is both an honour and a reward, but it requires a demonstrated commitment to the organisation and its mission and goals, in addition to dedicating the time to serve. The candidate must be able to attend all four meetings a year, which consists of a minimum of nine meeting days (in Amsterdam and other European locations), excluding travel days plus a number of ad hoc virtual meetings. These meetings are subject to change based on the evolving Covid-19 pandemic implications on the EAIE as well as changes to the EAIE meeting schedule. In addition, PDC members have a shared responsibility for evaluating EAIE Academy courses and the Train the Trainer programme (in person and / or online).

Understanding of teamwork: Many people contribute their efforts toward the realisation of the Association’s goals and objectives – no one does it alone. Well-developed interpersonal and intercultural communication skills are an essential element of effective teamwork within the EAIE.

Sound judgment and integrity: Assuring high-quality training activities requires the ability to subordinate special interests for the greater good of the Association, examine issues impartially and clearly communicate decisions made by the committee.

Other desired attributes include:

  • Pro-active personality and work ethic

  • Possession of a global network of contacts

  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English

Publications Committee (PC)

Roles and responsibilities

The main responsibility of the PC lies in developing and implementing an overall publications strategy that is based on the vision and mission of the Association. The PC initiates and stimulates new contributions from authors for various publications, including the EAIE’s member magazine, Forum; the Conference Conversation Starter series; and e-publications, such as Pathways to Practice. The Committee additionally advises on policy and procedures for working with these authors.

Overall, the Committee endeavours to ensure that the different publications meet the needs of EAIE members and that the content reflects diverse perspectives on the main issues in the internationalisation of higher education in Europe and the world.

Serving as a PC member offers the opportunity to be one of the key influencers of knowledge dissemination within the EAIE. It requires preparing for, attending and actively participating in all scheduled PC meetings (three per year), as well as e-mail exchanges. Individual members may also be given specific tasks between meetings and then be asked to report back. PC members do not typically write for EAIE publications during their committee tenure; rather, their role is to facilitate the contributions of others.

Preferred characteristics

Proven professional experience: Advancing the EAIE’s publications strategy requires the ability to assess developments in all facets of the field. Members should have editorial experience, as well as demonstrated knowledge of international higher education that can be used to contribute to the content of the Association’s publications.

Communication and networking skills: Being a member of the Publications Committee requires having the networking skills to identify existing knowledge within the Association and contributors in the field of international education. It also requires being able to effectively brief prospective authors on the nature of the EAIE’s publications and processes and to appropriately manage author expectations.

Strong analytical and decision-making skills: Assessing contributions and advising on policies requires critical thinking and the capacity to assimilate information quickly, reach balanced conclusions and articulate recommendations.

Commitment: Serving as a member of the PC is both an honour and a reward, but it requires a demonstrated commitment to the organisation and its mission and goals, in addition to dedicating the time to
serve. The candidate must be able to attend all three meetings a year. This may consist of a minimum of nine meeting days (in Amsterdam and other European locations), excluding travel days plus a number of ad hoc virtual meetings. These meetings are subject to change based on the evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and their effects on the EAIE as well as changes to the EAIE meeting schedule.

Understanding of teamwork: Many people contribute their efforts toward the realisation of the Association’s goals and objectives – no one does it alone. Well-developed interpersonal and intercultural communication skills are an essential element of effective teamwork within the EAIE.

Sound judgment and integrity: Assuring high-quality publications requires the ability to subordinate special interests for the greater good of the Association, examine issues impartially and clearly communicate decisions made by the Committee.

Other desired attributes include:

  • Pro-active personality and work ethic
  • Possession of a global network of contacts
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English
