W01: Think before you speak: Language awareness and parallel language use in policy development and implementation

Language and culture play a critical role in the internationalisation of higher education institutions. However, despite this ubiquity and relevance, many institutions struggle with developing, implementing, and monitoring adequate policies in all university operations in various contexts with multiple stakeholders.

This workshop discusses achievements and challenges with examples from national, institutional, and disciplinary contexts, and builds in space for interaction and networking.

Based on insights from organisational change and experiences, the facilitators present a structured, contextual approach for effective policy development, implementation, and monitoring, and discuss how to engage multiple stakeholders and organise resources.

This workshop will help you:

W02: Moving towards strategic enrollment management

This workshop targets professionals in marketing, recruitment, enrollment and admissions roles, and tackles the complexities of aligning diverse organisational interests to ensure a seamless journey for international students, from initial interaction to the end of the first term. Specifically, it will address organisational alignment, enhancing strategic enrollment management (SEM), exploring adaptable organisational models, offering support solutions, encouraging a customised approach, focusing on tangible outcomes and delivering actionable results.

Participants will be provided with practical insights and strategies to enhance international student recruitment and enrolment to support internationalisation.

W03: Enhancing collaborations: Designing and implementing university partnership evaluations [SOLD OUT]

This half-day workshop will guide participants through the process of designing and conducting an evaluation of a strategic partnership or other priority partnership between higher education institutions.Participants will learn about different types and methods of evaluation. They will be challenged to think about existing or potential partnerships and how to evaluate them at different stages. During the workshop, participants will familiarise themselves with an evaluation framework designed specifically for strategic partnerships.

The workshop will approach and explore this framework through hands-on exercises, case study examples and the sharing of experiences.By the end of the workshop, participants will be ready to design and implement an evaluation fit for their institution.

• Summarise different methods and stages of the evaluation of strategic partnerships
• Demonstrate a familiarity with relevant resources (EVALUATE framework and handbook)
• Design an evaluation of a strategic partnership fit for specific institutional purpose

W04: From cultural roots to new routes: Examining the bottlenecks and solutions for international students

This workshop will explore how staff involved in internationalisation can help Gen Z prepare for life in a globalising, diverse and interconnected world. The student community has been affected by the digital age, climate change, a shifting financial landscape and uncertainty globally.  

In this workshop, participants will discuss the impact on their academic and emotional capacities, considering how best to understand difficulties and difference to produce a more enriching and successful learning experience. Themes such as competences, attitudes, communication and intercultural knowledge will be explored, with participants reflecting on their own experiences with students, using lived-experience videos from the international community to encourage dialogue.

• Gain insight into adaptive and maladaptive ways of dealing with academic challenges in a globally uncertain world
• Understand warning signs that indicate risk among students
• Increase culturally sensitive skills to prepare graduates for a diverse career globally

W05: Great minds think differently: A disciplinary approach to engage academics in curriculum internationalisation

Curriculum internationalisation (IoC), a complex academic process that is vital for campus-wide global engagement, relies heavily on academic staff. Engaging faculty beyond a few champions has been historically challenging. This is a well-known problem.

Workshop participants will analyse academic disciplines, using 25 years of research-based practices, and create discipline-specific communication strategies to boost faculty involvement in internationalising the curriculum.

​This workshop will help you:

• Gain a deep understanding of the unique disciplinary features in the four (hard/soft, pure/applied) categories, and understand how they each uniquely manifest in IoC
• Analyse how these disciplinary features inform IoC communication strategies across each of the disciplinary categories
• Develop discipline-specific communication strategies which can be used immediately

This workshop is particularly relevant for internationalisation officers, educational developers, and academics who are involved in leading curriculum internationalisation. 

W08: Creative Leadership: tools and practices for your daily office challenges [SOLD OUT]

Our current university world is full of uncertainty, complexity, and scarce resources. Pandemics, wars, climate change, technological advancement and political shifts add little clarity, and do not provide simple solutions. This all calls for a new and different type of leadership that inspires teams to co-create, learn, and grow with the challenges they face. As university teams, we need to increase our creativity, our power to improvise, and our agility. Not only to survive the waves, but also to surf them.

W09: Future-proofing your funnel: Unlocking Gen Alpha insights for student recruitment excellence

C03: University of Toulouse III- Paul Sabatier: Discover one of the biggest French universities in Science, Health, Sport, Technology and Engineering

This Campus Showcase allows participants to explore the university’s diverse academic programmes and research endeavours, spanning fields from computer engineering specialised in e-health, science, law, sports science and humanities and social sciences.

The National School of Meteorology in Toulouse serves as a premier institution for meteorology training. The school offers comprehensive educational programmes ranging from initial training for meteorology engineers and research master’s degrees, to specialised and continuing education courses. With strong links to operational and research units, ENM leverages its extensive expertise and international reputation to prepare students to excel in the meteorological and climatic fields, addressing global challenges.     

This Campus Showcase will allow participants to meet the Director and Head of the international department of ENM, M. Philippe Dandin, who will be there to answer participants’ questions.

 

What's new in the Western Balkans: en route to effective internationalisation of higher education (S1.09)

This session requires a special application process and is only open to registered conference attendees. It is for individuals who are currently enrolled in (or applying to) a doctoral programme and are undertaking research on internationalisation. This session is specifically aimed at helping you break down the complexity of the research you are undertaking and develop insight into how to effectively express its value and relevance to others. W13: Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging: Are we speaking the same language?

W15: Using an evidence-based practice approach when designing Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) environments

W16: Micro-credentials: From the European concept to an effective international programme

More and more universities are offering, or planning to offer, micro-credentials, often with an eye to the international context. But how can micro-credentials effectively support innovative teaching and learning practices? What are the rules universities should follow in order to design successful international micro-credentials?

After presenting the European framework and outlining how universities can benefit from micro-credentials, including from a lifelong learning perspective, the workshop will challenge participants to actively design a micro-credential. Based on the results of experimentation and via a role-play scenario, participants will be invited to work together to acquire the tools and methodology to develop a micro-credential.

This workshop will help you:

• Acquire general knowledge of the European approach to micro-credentials, definitions and regulatory frameworks in European Higher Education Area, and opportunities for universities
• Understand the roles different stakeholders can play in implementing micro-credential programmes

Back to Basics: Internationalisation for newcomers to the sector (S1.04)

Join other eco-minded participants for an afternoon of cleaning and trash picking on the banks of the Garonne River in Toulouse. Take advantage of this opportunity to network with your peers in the fresh air! Netwalkers will be transported by bus from the conference centre to the waterfront cleanup site.

A light snack and litter collecting materials such as gloves will be provided, but please be sure to wear some comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing (don't forget sunscreen and a hat!). All proceeds from registration will go to our hosting volunteer organisation, Champ D’Actions Association, who have been cleaning up the banks of the Garonne every Sunday for the past 7 years.
