Erich Thaler

Erich Thaler is responsible for the Networks and Global Partnerships unit, part of the President’s Office at the University of Basel.
Erich joined the University of Basel in 2007. He has been heading its Global Affairs unit for several years, building up and sustaining global partnerships and networks. Among his duties in his current role are the coordination of the Swiss–African research programme SARECO, with its focus on further developing the sareco.org database for early career scientists; the coordination of the European–Swiss funding program Interreg NRP for supporting Uni Basel academics in building up transnational research networks with Germany and France; and the leadership and continuous development of the Higher Education and Research Global Program (HEAR Global) with US, Swiss and French Universities, which aims at doctoral candidates and their preparation for entering a multifaceted and globally entangled Higher Education and Research workplace.
Erich served as Chair of the Expert Community Cooperation for Development for the 2020–2022 term, with its own focus on North–South Academic Cooperation, as well as a member of the German Network of Science Managers (NWM) and member of the Swiss expert group on internationalisation for swissuniversities. Before this position, Erich has held teaching and management responsibilities at higher education institutions and private education providers in Vienna, Munich, Paris, Seoul and Berlin.
