Recognising outstanding achievements: Meet the 2026 EAIE Award winners

A cornerstone of the EAIE calendar, the EAIE Awards recognise organisations and individuals who have made meaningful contributions to internationalisation across Europe and beyond. At this year’s President’s Reception during EAIE Glasgow 2026, EAIE President Sara López Selga announced the 2026 Award winners live, adding a sense of anticipation and celebration to the evening, where those in attendance celebrated the two winners whose work has exemplified excellence in the field.  

Award for Excellence in Internationalisation Award: Scholars at Risk

Scholars at Risk (SAR) was selected for this year’s Excellence in Internationalisation Award in recognition of its extraordinary and sustained contribution to protecting scholars and defending academic freedom worldwide. As SAR marks its 25th anniversary, the EAIE Board reflected on the organisation’s long-standing commitment to safeguarding individuals whose work, ideas and voices are threatened — a mission that has only grown more urgent in recent years. The Board’s decision was shaped by the increasingly complex environment in which SAR operates. Shifting geopolitical dynamics, particularly within Europe, have created new pressures for scholars and institutions alike. In recognising SAR with the Excellence in Internationalisation Award, the EAIE honours not only the organisation’s achievements over the past 25 years, but also its unwavering dedication to solidarity, protection and advocacy. SAR’s work exemplifies the values at the heart of international higher education: openness, collaboration and the belief that knowledge thrives when scholars are free and safe to pursue it. Robert Quinn, Executive Director at Scholars at Risk, accepted the award on behalf of the organisation. 

Award for Vision and Leadership: Sir Steve Smith

Professor Sir Steve Smith was selected as the recipient of this year’s Vision and Leadership Award in recognition of his exceptional standing within the international higher education sector and his sustained leadership in advancing transnational education. The EAIE Board reflected on his long and distinguished career, noting the tangible and lasting contributions he has made across institutions, national systems and global partnerships. His leadership has consistently shaped practice and thinking in international education, not only through his institutional roles but also through his influential government appointments. Since being named the UK Government International Education Champion in 2020, Sir Steve has played a pivotal role in strengthening global education partnerships and expanding the UK’s international engagement.The Board also commended his willingness to challenge assumptions and bring a critical, thoughtful perspective to the sector at a time of significant change.
