Research Snapshot: EAIE Barometer

EAIE Barometer (Third edition)
Published date: 20 March 2024
The EAIE Barometer, third edition is the result of an extensive survey conducted by the European Association for International Education (EAIE) in the period September-November 2023. More than 2800 individuals working in international higher education education across the European Higher Education Area provided reactions to a wide-ranging set of questions having to do with their professional roles and the performance of their employing institutions/organisations with respect to internationalisation. This research was conducted to provide insight into how professionals working on the frontlines of internationalisation policy and practice in Europe view their work, their institutions and the key issues affecting the field today. The research would be interesting to international higher education professionals as well as institutional leaders and policymakers focused on internationalisation in higher education across the European Higher Education Area.
The EAIE Barometer provides ample evidence that the professionals working to advance internationalisation in European higher education are enthusiastic, engaged actors whose frontline perspectives can substantively enrich the work of institutional leaders and policymakers.
About the authors
Key findings from the reseach:
-
Commitment in the face of change: In a variety of ways, international higher education professionals register high levels of commitment and satisfaction with their work, but many have seen job or role changes in the last three years and there is a real appetite for training/professional development activities.
-
Real pressure is felt to deliver impact in relation to internationalisation: 47% of respondents reported feeling ‘significant’ or ‘very significant’ pressure in their roles when it comes to demonstrating the impact of internationalisation and 63% characterise the debate or discussion about the impact of internationalisation at their institution or organisation as ‘urgent’ or ‘very urgent’.
-
Everything needs attention: The multifaceted nature of internationalisation is evident in the way that a range of different issues are perceived as requiring ‘more’ or ‘continued’ attention in order for HEIs to achieve their goals. No one key priority (or short list of such priorities) seems to be dominating the internationalisation agenda across the EHEA.
