Balancing values and strategic objectives in international partnerships: risk assessment and ethical considerations

International strategies in higher education increasingly include collaborations between partner institutions and organisations in countries and cultures where the operating environment varies significantly. New and often unfamiliar challenges arising from such partnerships can make risk assessment more difficult and, at the same time, more important. This workshop will review risk assessment principles, policies and frameworks, focusing on their application to international partnerships through case studies and scenarios. It will also explore ethical challenges in international collaborations and consider the boundaries universities, researchers and students may need to set to preserve their autonomy and integrity.

Learning outcomes

• Learn about the major sources of risk and the importance of risk assessment when identifying and developing international partnerships
• Discover ways to manage risk effectively in international partnerships
• Understand what kind of ethical considerations and challenges might occur when collaborating with partners in different operating environments
