Session types Lisbon
Every individual absorbs information uniquely – therefore, our educational content is as diverse as our participants’ preferences! These are the proposal types you will find in the conference programme.
Panel session
A panel session is made up of short, thought-provoking and stimulating presentations from two expert speakers in the field, followed by a discussion with the audience under the guidance of the session Chair. The Chair is tasked with briefly introducing the speakers and stimulating the discussion of different viewpoints among speakers and participants. Interactivity and creative session types are highly encouraged.
Submit a panel session if you:
- Have a lot of information to share, including new research and interesting case studies.
- Have a partner from another university who can offer a second perspective.
Roundtable sessions (including World Café)
Roundtable sessions are designed to encourage discussion, knowledge exchange and active participation. The room is arranged with round tables seating approximately seven participants per table, creating an environment where attendees can engage directly with one another and explore a topic in greater depth. Unlike presentation-led formats, roundtable sessions balance knowledge sharing with audience participation. Presenters are encouraged to facilitate discussion, invite diverse perspectives and create opportunities for attendees to contribute their own experiences and insights.
Within a roundtable session, you may want to further engage with your audience by gathering and sharing the collective knowledge in the room using the World Café format.
A World Café is a facilitated discussion approach that can be incorporated into a roundtable session to maximise interaction and collective learning. In a World Café, participants move between tables at regular intervals, discussing a specific question, challenge or idea at each table. As participants rotate, they build on the ideas generated by previous groups, allowing conversations to evolve and connections to emerge across the room. Participants typically capture key insights on flipchart paper or other collaborative materials, helping to create a collective record of the discussion. At the end of the session, facilitators bring participants together to reflect on common themes, share key takeaways and identify new perspectives that emerged through the conversations. For World Café sessions, additional materials will be provided to support group work, including flipchart paper, markers and sticky notes.
Submit a roundtable session if you:
- Want to integrate small-group discussion throughout your session.
- Want to combine expert knowledge-sharing with audience participation.
- Would like participants to contribute their own experiences, perspectives and good practices.
- Are looking to facilitate meaningful dialogue around a topic, challenge or case study.
Consider using the World Café approach if you:
- Want to explore a topic or challenge from multiple perspectives.
- Wish to promote peer learning, collaboration and idea exchange.
- Want participants to build on one another's ideas through a series of facilitated conversations.
- Are seeking a highly interactive format focused on collective knowledge and discussion.
Fishbowl session
The fishbowl format removes the traditional barriers between the speakers and audience by placing the Chair, speakers and audience in concentric circles, promoting a 'campfire-style' relaxed atmosphere. Participants listen to the discussions with the added opportunity to join the discussion and share their own thoughts, experiences and best practices on the content matter should they so wis

- Want to promote peer learning and exchanging of best practices.
Ignite© session
Ignite© sessions are fast-paced sessions designed to generate awareness and stimulate discussion. Each session is made up of a collection of individually proposed five-minute presentations, consisting of twenty slides which auto-advance every 15 seconds. After each ignite presentation the assigned session Chair encourages audience Q&A. A perfect introduction for first-time speakers, yet also great for experienced speakers. Submit an Ignite® session if you:
- Want to share a quick-fire, stimulating presentation in five minutes.
- Are looking to submit a proposal without any co-presenters included.
Workshops
A workshop is a focused, skills-based training activity led by two experienced facilitators, offered to conference participants for an additional fee on the Tuesday of the Conference. Workshops are either full-day (eight hours, including lunch and two coffee breaks) or half-day (three and a half hours with one coffee break), and are designed to deepen knowledge, build practical skills and provide tangible takeaways. The knowledge level in a workshop proposal should be aimed at mid-career to seasoned professionals.
Submit a conference workshop if you:
- Are a skilled and experienced workshop facilitator, with a workshop topic and programme in mind.
- Have a co-facilitator who can help deliver timely, relevant training to conference participants.
Poster sessions
Poster sessions offer a unique opportunity to engage with and talk at length with those interested in specific innovations and research. They present original ideas, as well as new techniques or technologies being used to facilitate the internationalisation of higher education, in poster format. Speakers work with graphic designers to produce an interesting and enticing poster that inspires participants to discuss it with the presenter and those around them.
Submit a poster session if you:
- Have an interesting topic that can be presented by one or two people in a visually stimulating format.
- Would like to engage one-to-one with many people over the 90-minute timeslot.
