Despite the widely recognised need for transformative collaborations such as the European university alliances, many higher education institutions struggle to monitor and assess the impact of strategic partnerships. In these transformative change processes, the critical role of diversity is often overlooked. This workshop will address two essential questions for strategic partnerships: how to work effectively with institutional diversity; and how to create, monitor and assess impact. It has been designed as an impact clinic grounded in change methodology to provide a structured, highly interactive and inclusive environment. You will bring in your specific challenges to receive a tailor-made diagnosis and treatment plan.

Learning outcomes

• Develop a better understanding of challenges and underlying tensions within strategic partners;
• Learn how to develop a tailor-made diagnosis and impact process plan to work with institutional diversity and create, monitor and assess impact;
• Take away peer feedback, new trusted networks, actionable guidelines, multiple resources and a first draft of an impact process plan.

Drawing on the HUBIoC capacity-building project, this workshop will provide practical strategies for designing student-centred, internationalised curriculum experiences that empower educators and students to create meaningful, lasting change across continents. Do we truly understand the barriers international students face, and how institutional structures and our own actions shape their experiences? This workshop invites higher education professionals to reconnect with international student experiences and explore how empathy can transform communication and support. Constant exposure to student challenges can lead to desensitisation and a focus on individual resilience instead of systemic change. Using a game called Walk a Mile, developed by international students, you will learn through theory and experiential learning, bypassing psychological defences to uncover barriers and develop empathy and compassionate communications, and you will design concrete actions to build more inclusive environments.

💡 Crisis management | Student safety and security

In 2024, a peer group representing seven universities and supported by the European University Association explored how institutions can ensure continuity and quality in teaching and learning during crises. Through a cross-national analysis, the group identified institutional practices and preparedness strategies, publishing a comprehensive report and developing a matrix to classify crisis types as a basis for effective resilience strategies. This workshop will present the report’s key findings and foster interactive discussion to share cross-regional insights and develop transferable approaches for institutional resilience. It targets academic leaders, policymakers and educational developers engaged in crisis preparedness and quality assurance.
