EAIE & CMEPIUS Insight Event: Responsible internationalisation

The EAIE and the Slovenian National Agency for European Community Programmes and International Mobility Programmes (CMEPIUS) bring together key stakeholders for an event focused on responsible internationalisation in Slovenia.

Why attend?

Internationalisation is navigating an increasingly complex landscape. Balancing global openness and academic freedom with emerging priorities around research and security, ethical partnerships and institutional risk requires clear strategy and candid peer dialogue.

Co-organised by the EAIE and CMEPIUS, this half-day EAIE Internationalisation Insight Series event brings together university leaders and senior internationalisation professionals to explore what "responsible internationalisation" looks like in practice. Taking place on 11 November in Ljubljana, registration is exclusively open to rectors, vice-rectors or directors across Slovenian higher education institutions.

Programme at a glance

10:00–10:10 | Welcome words by Alenka Flander (CMEPIUS) and Laura Rumbley (EAIE)

The EAIE & CMEPIUS Insight Event - Responsible internationalisation: Finding the right balance will open with welcome remarks from distinguished representatives of the partner organisations supporting the event. Each speaker will have five minutes to address participants and set the scene for the discussions that follow.

  • Alenka Flander, Director, CMEPIUS

  • Laura Rumbley, Director Knowledge Development and Research, EAIE

10:10–10:40 | Keynote: Responsible internationalisation: What's at stake for our higher education institutions today?

What does responsible internationalisation mean in Europe today? What makes issues of responsibility, security, academic freedom and related issues important at this moment in time, and what kinds of attention and commitments do they require from Europe's higher education institutions? In light of his extensive and varied experience – including in his current role leading risk assessment, risk management and research security at the University of Helsinki, and his former position as President of the EAIE — Markus Laitinen offers a highly relevant and well-informed perspective on the key issues at hand, providing a provocative and thought-provoking springboard for our exploration of responsible internationalisation in the Slovenian and wider European higher education contexts.

  • Speaker: Markus Laitinen (University of Helsinki)

10:40–11:30 | Interactive panel: Drawing inspiration from experimentation and good practice at home and abroad

Higher education institutions and systems approach the work of ensuring responsible internationalisation from unique perspectives and with a range of different motivations and objectives. Pooling our knowledge and experience across institutions and national contexts provides important insights into options for better policy and practice. This session will surface good practice examples from several organisational and institutional perspectives to stimulate candid conversation about strategies and tactics for advancing this work.

11:45–12:30 | Breakout sessions

After setting the tone with the keynote and the panel, the participants will now have the chance to take a deeper dive into specific topics of interest with the breakout sessions. There will be two breakout sessions: one focused on the institutional level, titled "Getting Started at the Institutional Level", and another focused on the national level, titled "National Approaches to Consider."

12:30–12:50 | Plenary regroup: Reflections from the break-out discussions

The plenary regroup offers the opportunity for large group discussion and debate about the key outcomes and insights that emerge from the breakout groups.

12:50-14:00 | Closing remarks and networking reception

To conclude the event, the organisers will return to share key takeaway messages from the gathering. This will be followed by a networking reception.
