As the landscape of higher education undergoes rapid transformation, questions arise about the future of internationalisation. This session revisits insights from the article "The End of Internationalization" by Uwe Brandenburg and Hans De Wit (2011), informed by recent developments in academia. We will explore the primary drivers behind the perceived decline in internationalization and its relevance for HEIs, especially with regard to key global challenges such as climate change and attacks on democracy. Participants will discuss varying contexts and drivers, and how institutions can strategically balance the drawbacks and benefits of international collaboration — for themselves and for the communities they serve. The session will foster dialogue among educators, administrators, and internationalisation advocates to reshape the narrative around the future of international education.
Professor Rachel Sandison OBE is responsible for leading the University of Glasgow’s strategy for external engagement covering an integrated portfolio of International Policy and Partnerships; Marketing and Communications; Brand and Reputation Management; Transnational Education; Student Recruitment and Admissions; Widening Access and Lifelong Learning; Development and Alumni Relations; and Civic Engagement. Rachel is also the University’s Sanctuary Champion.
Rachel is the University’s Universitas 21 network Senior Leader, a Board member of the University’s European network, The Guild, and the University lead for the CIVIS European University Alliance, thereby supporting the activity of a global group of research-intensive universities.
Rachel is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Global Trustee and chair-elect of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Scottish Commissioner for Fulbright US-UK and the Scottish Government's Trade and Investment Envoy for International Education, whilst also contributing to several sector advisory boards both at home and overseas.
Dr Samia Chasi is an accomplished practitioner, facilitator and scholar in higher education internationalisation, with over 25 years of experience in advancing internationalisation and cultivating strategic partnerships. She currently leads and advances global engagements of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg as Head of the institutional Internationalisation and Strategic Partnerships Office. She is a member of the National Association of International Educators (NAIE), based at the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) and a member of the Advisory Board of COIL Connect.
Dr Chasi holds a PhD in Education from Wits, a Master of Philosophy in Engineering Management from the University of Johannesburg and a Master of Arts in English, Russian and Sociology from the University of Rostock. Her research interests lie in critical perspectives on higher education internationalisation, with a particular emphasis on decolonial and transformative approaches.
