Many of the 60+ European university alliances collaborate with non-European partners, most with African institutions. The CIVIS alliance was one of the first and stands for a comprehensive approach to such partnerships, characterised by a relatively small set of partners from Africa and the ambition to collaborate across all activity areas. African institutions started as strategic partners but since 2024 have been associate members. This poster shares some key learnings from the CIVIS experience.
