💡Research on Internationalisation
The EAIE Barometer survey exercise provides periodic insight into the health and vitality of the international education sector across the European Higher Education Area. In 2026, a tailored version of the survey attempts to do the same in Japan. What does internationalisation look like from the perspective of frontline professionals in Japan, and what can Japanese and European colleagues learn from one another through a dialogue based on these survey data? Dr. Hiroshi Ota is a Professor at the Center for General Education at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, where he serves as Director of the university’s Global Education Program. His research primarily focuses on higher education policies and practices related to internationalization and international student mobility from a comparative perspective. He has more than 160 publications in Japanese and English, including 30 book chapters published by Springer, Routledge, SAGE, Multilingual Matters, and so on. Dr. Ota serves as a vice president of the Japan Association of International Student Education (JAISE) and a board member of the Research Consortium for the Sustainable Promotion of International Education (RECSIE). In addition, he is a visiting researcher for the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), a government agency that supports and promotes international education. Dr. Ota received his Ed.M. and Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study international education administration in the U.S. in 1996 and was invited by the Harvard-Yenching Institute to serve as a Visiting Scholar from 2023-24. His most recent book is "East and Southeast Asian Perspectives on the Internationalisation of Higher Education: Policies, Practices and Prospects" published by Routledge.
