We aim to enrol the right students: successful students who add value in various ways. However, recruitment, admissions, visa and payment journeys may result in risky situations for students and institutions. As risk awareness and control mechanisms vary between countries and institutions, this session explores research-based risky scenarios to show how different controls can work to reduce risk in the student journey. Two examples will help us dive into on-the-ground ways to cope with risk.

Marlies Overbeek is Chair of the EAIE’s Marketing and Admissions Thematic Committee and College Director at The Hague Pathway College, operated by Navitas in close partnership with The Hague University of Applied Sciences.
With over 20 years of experience in international higher education, Marlies has held leadership roles across marketing, student recruitment, and admissions.
Her work is rooted in building inclusive, student-centered pathways to success, with a strong focus on cross-cultural collaboration and data-informed strategy. She is particularly passionate about connecting global talent with meaningful learning opportunities and driving sustainable growth through innovation in recruitment, student engagement and incorporating learning and teaching within.
At The Hague Pathway College, she leads a diverse team and works at the intersection of academic excellence and operational delivery, to enhance the student journey from first contact to graduation.
Marlies is a regular contributor to sector events and dialogues, and brings both practical insight and strategic vision to her work within EAIE. She thrives on co-creating solutions with peers across Europe and beyond — especially around improving student conversion, optimizing admissions processes, and aligning marketing with institutional mission and academic delivery.
