There has been much debate recently around the ‘neutrality’ of higher education internationalisation and whether it might inadvertently sustain existing inequalities. This session will examine and aim to enhance diversity and internationalisation strategies in higher education. Kriszta Kaspers is the Head of Education Development and Quality Management (EDQM) at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, the most international higher education institution in the Netherlands. Holding an MSc in International Business & Economics, Kriszta is brings expertise in accreditation processes, strategic planning, and quality assurance in education. She plays a key role in ensuring the academic excellence of Wittenborg’s BBA, MBA, and MBM (MSc) programmes, offered in Apeldoorn, Amsterdam, and Munich.
Kriszta leads the internal Assurance of Learning (AoL) process, essential for monitoring and improving student performance, and drives the continuous enhancement of Wittenborg’s educational offerings. Her work involves close collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to align the institution’s goals with broader societal impacts, particularly in Apeldoorn and its region.
Kriszta’s dedication to internationalisation, diversity, and ethics guides her leadership, ensuring Wittenborg achieves its strategic objectives and positively impacts its global and local communities.

Peter Birdsall, the President of Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, has been a pivotal figure in shaping the business school’s regional, national, and international reputation. With an extensive background and over 30 years of experience in education management and policy development, Birdsall has been instrumental in driving Wittenborg's growth and internationalisation. His leadership has fostered a diverse, inclusive academic community, emphasising innovation and practical learning. Birdsall's commitment to academic excellence and global collaboration reflects his dedication to preparing students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Peter is passionate about quality higher education in the Netherlands, that is inclusive, diverse and embraces internationalisation. His 'fatherland' is England, and his 'motherland' is Switzerland. Peter’s adopted homeland is the Netherlands, where he has lived since 1988. Irene Diez Ferreras is the International Office and Double Degree Coordinator at FHNW School of Business (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, School of Business), with over 11 years of experience in the field of international education. Having started her career as an International Office Student Support Services Administrator in 2013, Irene quickly advanced through various roles, gaining extensive expertise in global student mobility, international partnerships, and process optimisation.
In her current role, Irene leads the development and coordination of international Double Degree Programmes, building collaborative relationships between institutions, negotiating bilateral agreements, and promoting these programs on national and international levels. Additionally, Irene plays a critical role in facilitating smooth transitions for both incoming and outgoing students, ensuring they receive the support needed to thrive in cross-cultural academic environments.
Irene is also responsible for enhancing internationalisation strategies by analysing global trends and streamlining cross-campus processes. Her work has significantly contributed to improving the international student experience, both in-person and online, through innovative digital tools and services.
Irene holds a Master of Science in International Management from FHNW and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, further solidifying her expertise in the international education sector.
