New patterns of academic migration are emerging as learners increasingly move away from the traditional student mobility destinations. This shift reflects the rise of new learner identities shaped by socio-political dynamics, digital access and new learning aspirations. This session will explore how institutions can prepare to welcome new learners by adapting teaching practices and fostering the skills needed to thrive, such as intercultural agility, digital fluency and career adaptability.
Dr Navaporn Snodin is Lecturer in Cross-Cultural Communication at Newcastle University, UK. Her research focuses on the internationalisation of higher education, international student and academic mobility, and inclusive learning environments. In 2016, she organised a Researchers’ Links Workshop, bringing together researchers from the UK and Thailand to advance collaborative research on the internationalisation of Thai higher education. Between 2016 and 2018, she was awarded a Newton Fund Advanced Fellowship to investigate the mobility experiences of international students and academics within Thai universities. Over the past decade, Dr Snodin has led and collaborated on research examining internationalisation in higher education, with particular attention to student and academic mobility, belonging, identity, language, and participation in internationalised educational settings. Her recent work explores learner diversity through studies of LGBTQ students in intercultural contexts and English-medium instruction in Thai medical education, highlighting how institutional policies and pedagogical practices shape equitable access to learning. Through her research, she seeks to inform policies and practices that move beyond student recruitment to create inclusive, learner-centred environments where diverse learners can participate, develop agency, and thrive.
