Dr Denise MacDermott is a Reader in Social Work in the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences at Ulster University based in the Derry-Londonderry campus in Northern Ireland. Denise is the Chairperson of the Professional in Practice Approval Committee (Northern Ireland Social Care Council) and Deputy Chair for the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Social Work Subject Benchmarks Advisory Group supporting students, colleagues and driving change across the higher education sector.
Dr MacDermott is an activist educator and a champion for inclusive social work education, embedding active learning collaborations and pedagogic research which integrate the voices of people with lived experiences in social work education.
Denise is invested in the internationalisation of social work education, exploring how curricula can continually evolve, support critical thinking and deconstruct the status quo to enhance the professional learning of students. Dr MacDermott is committed to building sustainable collaborations for learning which support students to understand contested histories, redress power imbalances and embrace participatory approaches which emphasise social justice and human rights.
