German students increasingly study abroad to develop linguistic and intercultural competencies, yet these outcomes are not guaranteed. A cooperative doctoral project at TU Darmstadt and TH Aschaffenburg in Germany is examining how quality assurance mechanisms address these competencies at STEM-focused institutions. Findings from 200 documents reveal limited didactic differentiation and a narrow understanding of internationalisation.

M.Sc. Birgit Kraus is a cooperative doctoral candidate at both TU Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences exploring the quality assurance of linguistic and intercultural competences in study abroad contexts.
She holds a master’s degree in higher education management from Krems University/Austria and is a certified teacher for upper secondary schools after studying English, French, Finnish, and German as a foreign language at Greifswald University/Germany. She also pursued post-graduate studies in contrastive linguistics, Finnish, and translation at the University of Vaasa.
Currently, she serves as an executive advisor to the Vice-President for Academic Careers and Diversity at TU Darmstadt/Germany.
In addition, she volunteers as Chairperson of the German-Finnish Society of Hesse (Deutsch-Finnische Gesellschaft Hessen), promoting cultural and educational exchange between Germany and Finland.
Renate Link is a Professor of Business English and Intercultural Communication at Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences/Germany. She is also the Vice Head of the Language Centre and Director of the Institute of Intercultural Communication. In addition, Renate co-heads the regional SIETAR chapter Frankfurt-Rhine-Main-Lower Franconia, is a former board member of the German Society for Key Competences in Teaching, Research and Practice and a current member of the IACCM (International Association of Cross-Cultural Management) Council.
