Universities walk a tightrope: they have no fixed ideology, yet tend to be progressive; they can’t exist without a national framework, yet increasingly operate with an international mission. Recent political change in Turkey and Hungary prove that the liberal context that supports international higher education can disappear unexpectedly. This session will present the stories of how two universities in those countries have coped with the profound new challenges brought on by political upheaval.
