Elif Shafak
We are pleased to announce that one of Turkey’s most acclaimed female writers, Elif Shafak, will be the keynote speaker at the Opening Plenary on 11 September. Having lived all over the world, Elif’s global and multicultural perspective offers an excellent introduction to the many contrasts of Istanbul and this year’s conference theme: ‘Weaving the future of global partnerships’.
Writing fiction in both Turkish and English, Elif’s style fuses Western and Eastern traditions of storytelling, drawing on diverse cultures and literary traditions, and uncovering the stories of women, minorities, immigrants and subcultures. Her work often addresses controversial topics and inspires vivid debate, as seen following the publication of her first English novel, The Bastard of Istanbul, in which she faced criminal charges for ‘insulting Turkishness’ (the case was ultimately dismissed).
In addition to writing fiction, Elif holds a PhD in Political Science. Her thesis on ‘Islamic Mysticism and the Circular Understanding of Time’ was awarded by the Social Scientists Institute and she was additionally awarded the honorary distinction of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2010. Watch her TED Talk for a sneak peek into some of her insights.
