Toledo or ‘Toletum’ as it is known locally, is a beautiful city that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage. Its historic gothic and renaissance buildings and its narrow streets and alleys testify to the old days of magnificence. The city is located one hour’s drive from Madrid. This tour will take you on a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city, and allow you to explore the inside of many of the historic buildings in the old quarter, such as the monumental Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo; the Church of St Tomé, which houses the famous painting ‘The Burial of Count Orgaz’ by El Greco; the old Jewish quarter with its narrow streets; the Synagogue of Ste Maria la Blanca; and the Museum Victorio Macho, which houses works by the famous sculptor. The tour will also include a visit to a typical Damasquino factory, the well-known handicraft art of Toledo.
Avila and Segovia
time: 09.15–18.15
fee: EUR 80 (includes lunch and transportation in luxury bus)
minimum participants: 20
Avila is one of the oldest cities in Spain and is the best example of a fortified city in the country, surrounded by very well preserved medieval walls from the 11th century. The old quarters hold an important number of Romanesque churches, gothic palaces and a 12th century fortified cathedral. The city was also the birth place of Saint Therese of Avila and the source of the Spanish catholic mysticism. The tour will take you to visit the Cathedral, the Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente and Mayor Square as well as on a brief walk through its old streets to see the Convent of Saint Therese. The tour will then continue on to the city of Segovia. This old Roman city still preserves the magnificent Roman Aqueduct from the time of Emperor Augustus. It also has an elegant cathedral and is home to the Alcazar fortress, the most spectacular castle in Spain. Both towns, Avila and Segovia, have been designated UNESCO Mankind Heritage cities, and this chance to explore them should not be missed.
