A mix of song, dance and guitar which originated in Andalusia, flamenco has become an important dance associated with many parts of Spain. Flamenco is known for its intricate rapid passages,

Opening PlenaryPalacio Municipal de CongresosThursday 17 September 16.45–18.00
The Opening Plenary, kindly sponsored by Fundación ONCE, will be held at the conference venue. The Plenary features an address by keynote speaker Robert Swan, world-renowned polar explorer, environmental leader, and the first man ever to walk to both the North and South Poles. Short addresses will also be given by Jesús Hernandez Galan, Accessibility Director of Fundación ONCE, a non-profit organisation that focuses its activities on improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in Spanish and European society; and Bonifacio Vega Garcia of Madrid Global. To close the Plenary, the EAIE President will present the Constance Meldrum award, and the audience will be treated to dance performances of both Spanish and Brazilian origin by University Carlos III of Madrid. These performances are sponsored by ENAS (European Network of Academic Sports Services).

An evening of exploration – guided walking tour of MadridPlaza Mayor 27Thursday 17 September 20.00–21.30
The Royal Court has been in Madrid since 1561, when King Philip II turned the city into the capital of his vast empire. This tour will allow visitors to discover the history encased within the streets of Habsburg Madrid, as they follow the footprints left by successive monarchs. The walking tour will not only take you past some of the main monuments from that dynasty, including: Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa, Casa de la Villa, Iglesia del Sacramento Church and Plaza de Oriente, but will also give visitors the chance to enjoy the charm of the streets, plazas and hidden corners of this area. Four groups of 25 participants will be guided on this evening tour.

The Closing Plenary and Reception will be held at the conference venue. The Plenary will feature a keynote address by Màrius Rubiralta Alcañiz, Secretary of State of Universities from the Ministry of Science and Innovation for Spain. We will also look ahead to the 2010 EAIE conference in Nantes, France. Finally, the Plenary will be closed with a performance by the EAIE Choir.
