Opening Plenary

The EAIE is delighted to welcome Robert Swan, world-renowned polar explorer, and the first man to walk to both the North and South Poles, as the keynote speaker for the EAIE Opening Plenary. His address will provide insight into the importance of leadership, trust, mutuality and working together. In today’s tumultuous economic environment, all businesses are faced with challenges that can be met with the right leadership and commitment. Robert Swan embodies these characteristics everyday because trust, leadership and collaboration are not only the ingredients of a successful exploration; they are a requirement if his team is to come home safely. Robert Swan will share his personal story and his thoughts about our environment and what it takes to overcome obstacles to achieve success. He will also discuss sustainable leadership at a keynote session on Friday.

The conference will close with an engaging keynote by Prof Mārius Rubiralta Alcaņiz, Secretary of State for Universities in Spain. Prof Rubiralta was awarded his PhD in chemical sciences and went on to become Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Barcelona. From 2005 to 2008, he was Rector of the University of Barcelona. Throughout his career, Prof Rubiralta as been active in fostering university research in Spain. He was the founder of the first scientific park in Spain, introducing the concept of forging partnerships between universities and industry. He is a strong proponent of new technology transfer policies and has written many articles and books on this subject. Prof Rubiralta will speak about ‘New challenges for Spanish higher education: excellence and internationalisation
