poster 1 Staff training: tips for globalising your workforce

This poster will present best practices on cross-cultural training for your employees. The success or failure of international partnerships relies upon strong communication skills. The research presented in this session will help you to develop a training programme you can use to help expand the intercultural communication skills of your employees.

poster 2 Joint management of international placements

This poster looks at the practicum component of student’s education and proposes a joint management of international placements by the International Relations and Career Services offices. It provides guidelines to manage law placements in order to ensure maximum integration of international incoming students into the labour market, and help them to take as much advantage as possible out of their experiences abroad.

poster 3 JOIMAN: Joint Degree Management and Administration Network

This poster will present the JOIMAN project. The project is a network aimed at surveying the existing administrative procedures for the management of joint programmes and developing new guidelines and tools in order to overcome administrative and legal constraints in the management of joint programmes. poster 4 - CANCELLED Nurturing intercultural communicative competence through study abroad

This poster presents a case study of the language and (inter)cultural learning of student sojourners. Ethnographic data was supplemented by the Intercultural Development Inventory, which measured their intercultural sensitivity. This session will stimulate dialogue about multifarious factors that may affect the development of intercultural communicative competence.

poster 5 Cultural preparation for North African and Middle Eastern students coming to Europe

We developed a cultural preparation course for students from North Africa and the Middle East who started, or were about to start, a study experience in Europe. It aims to improve the accessibility for the targeted students, to further knowledge and cultural awareness of European cultures, the EU and the EHEA and to increase the intercultural skills of the incoming students.

poster 6 Bringing the world to those that stay put

One of the missions of an International Office is to conceptualise internationalisation at home. Umeå University, Sweden, arranged their first International Week in November 2008. The event attracted attention to international aspects on campus by showcasing different tangible aspects of culture.

poster 7 Sustainability abroad: connecting young greens

Middlebury College is piloting an assessment tool called the Sustainability Tracking and Rating System (STARS). STARS applies to an entire campus and evaluates social responsibility and environmental stewardship. STARS serves beyond the home campus in conjunction with international partners to assess and make recommendations for a greener study abroad environment.

poster 8 Implementing a study visits programme

The action ‘Study Visits’ is a part of the transversal programme of LLP. Higher education professionals can apply for a scholarship to take part in such a visit. This is not very well known despite the fact that there are a lot of interesting themes for policy makers in higher education institutions offered in the catalogue of the study visits programme.

poster 10 Enhancing student mobility through short-term exchanges

This poster outlines a measure to make a short-term stay for Australian students in Salzburg both an interculturally and academically relevant experience with full credit-transfer and curriculum integration for both institutions. An Australian professor teaches a regular blocked course in Salzburg over three weeks, with students from both partner institutions participating.

poster 14 Virtual innovative university simulation – let’s play!

Virtual Innovative University Simulation (VIUS) is a non-profit, learning game project (virtual-uni.org). Players hold ‘positions’ in a simulated ‘university’, and interact on on-line platforms to create an innovative, global, virtual institution with a mission, vision, strategy, policies, processes, etc. The first of three phases of the game will be presented.

poster 15 PhD programmes: a possibility for an intercultural dialogue

This poster will provide details on a PhD programme on new media communication which allows not only mobility opportunities for students and teachers but also integrates intercultural dialogues into the curriculum. The basis for this dialogue is the unique combination of teachers from different countries and continents, who each bring their own educational methods, language and culture to the classroom.

poster 17 The realisation of the TEMPUS project SEXTANT

poster 18 TANDEM: learning between language and culture

The Tandem Learning Project was founded for international and regular students to structure intercultural learning outside the classroom. Students offer a skill that they can ‘teach’ to others – usually their mother tongue. The project has become an important instrument for the social and academic integration of incoming students.

poster 19 Give20: ESN fundraising campaign

Give20 is an unprecedented fundraising campaign organised by Erasmus Student Network to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The funds, raised from January to October 2009, will be donated to a UNICEF project in Bhutan. Our goal is to significantly contribute to improving living conditions and access to primary education for Bhutanese children.

poster 20 Towards inclusive universities: empowering disabled students

TIU, an EU project (Civil Society Dialogue Program, Turkey), partnering with the EAIE Disability Issues Worldwide Special Interest Group and other organisations, is investigating effective support for disabled university students across Europe through exchanges of information and best practices, empowerment of disabled students and the development of common standards of practice.

poster 21 Towards a common higher education area: the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean

PROMHEDEU-LAC is an EU–Latin American and Caribbean consortium aimed at promoting European HE in order to increase the flow of Latin American students to Europe by means of bi-regional cooperation. PROMHEDEU-LAC´s believes that in order to enhance the attractiveness, visibility and accessibility of European HE in LAC, European institutions should take into account that HE cooperation implies not only the transfer of knowledge but also the sharing of values.

poster 22 - Cancelled Coming to America

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the increased number of secondary age British students considering undergraduate study in the United States. The research took place at three different sixth form schools in England. The study examined students' experiences and how these experiences relate to their interest in undergraduate study in the United States. The results include, but are not limited to, the participants desire to take a multitude of coursework, the ability to postpone choosing one’s major and their interest in student life at universities in the United States.

poster 23 EMIS (European Universities International Services in the Erasmus Mundus Framework)

The Autonomous University of Barcelona is coordinating an Action 4 ERASMUS MUNDUS project called EMIS (European Universities International Services in the ERASMUS MUNDUS Framework). The project aims at enhancing the attractiveness of European higher education institutions by fostering the quality of international support services throughout Europe. The project has researched one of EU’s most prestigious programmes at master level, the Erasmus Mundus programme, which attracts students and scholars from all around the world.
