Attracting international students - immigration policy, recruitment challenges and improving UK competitiveness

Attracting international students - immigration policy, recruitment challenges and improving UK competitiveness

Following the recent HEFCE report: Global demand for English higher education which highlighted the first fall in non-EU student numbers for 29 years, this seminar focuses on the recruitment of international students to UK higher education institutions. Planned sessions focus on the value that international students provide to UK universities and the wider economy, the impact that recent changes to the post-study work visa is having on international recruitment and whether the UK should remove students from migration statistics.

The Diplomacy of Knowledge and Our Common Future
Knowledge diplomacy encompasses student mobility and collaborative research across borders (and across disciplines too). It has elsewhere been suggested that knowledge should contribute to a country’s selection of foreign policy objectives, and that knowledge diplomacy offers the opportunity to work at all education levels in a range of fields to develop common approaches to shared global challenges. Participants will explore the meaning of the diplomacy of knowledge and its potential to impact our common future in a meaningful and timely way.

Thematic University-Business Forum

Thematic University-Business Forum

Driving Competitiveness, Employability and Prosperity
Cooperation between higher education and business is at the core of the Modernisation Agenda of Higher Education, and crucial to making higher education more responsive to the needs of society. Effective cooperation strengthens the exchange and sharing of knowledge between business and academia and stimulates innovation in both environments. This type of cooperation has resulted in a range of policies and activities designed to encourage higher education institutions to build stronger links with the business sector. Companies should be (more) involved in the design and delivery of curricula, at both undergraduate and graduate level. Higher education institutions and business partners should work together more closely to promote entrepreneurship, mobility (between business and academia) and Lifelong Learning.

This University-Business Forum provides a unique opportunity to present and discuss common issues, to share examples of good practice and to explore the advantages and the value of sustained cooperation. This is an ideal opportunity to learn from each other, to develop understanding and the capabilities for future cooperation.
