This course will examine the issue of culture learning in education abroad with a particular focus on the ways in which such learning can be facilitated by providing not only pre-departure advising in person, but also online advising for students while they are abroad. The issue of intercultural facilitation while students are in the midst of their international programmes has been the subject of recent research. These studies indicate that students' intercultural development is enhanced by an ongoing facilitation process that engages them and asks them to reflect upon their intercultural experiences. This course will examine the theoretical assumptions, concepts, tools and mechanisms that are available for this purpose and are described in the ‘Maximizing Study Abroad Program Professional's Guide’.
