A special word about work placements

Work Placement… or do you call it stage, internship, work experience, summer placement, year in industry, traineeship…?

Students, employers and tutors are the three major stakeholders in organised work placements. For each of the stakeholders EMPLOI endeavours to offer as much support as possible.

Thanks to work placements academic disciplines and practical application can be interrelated, and key skills practised and developed.

Work placements:
  • facilitate quality of learning from work experience;
  • prepare students for effective transition into the workplace;
  • develop links between HEI and the field of action;
  • improve students employability;
  • give employers an opportunity to view students in terms of employment opportunities;

Generally work placements can be arranged in the framework of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP). The ERASMUS student mobility for placements action (SMP) enables students at higher education institutions to spend a placement period between 3 months and 12 months in an enterprise or organisation in another participating European country. The ERASMUS student placements will demonstrably contribute to developing the students' personal and professional competences, including languages and intercultural competence.

The Leonardo da Vinci programme links policy to practice in the field of vocational education and training (VET). Projects range from those giving individuals the chance to improve their competences, knowledge and skills through a period abroad, to Europe-wide co-operation between training organisations.

Work placements can also be arranged in the context of: education institutions, as in cooperative education;

Model Guidelines for Good Practice in International Work Placements
The set of documents on the next page has been developed as part of a project carried out by EMPLOI, to promote standards of good practice in the management of international work placements. While the project on which the documents are based was carried out in a European context, the guidelines have an international application. Subject to the Conditions of Use, the documents are designed for use as a resource by any institution of post-secondary education intending to send students abroad for a work placement in conjunction with studies at the home institution.
